A Collective Fight Against Dengue by Rangpur Urban Youth Council

Dengue continues to pose a serious public health challenge in Bangladesh, with people losing their lives to the disease and communities facing increasing health risks. In response to the growing concern, dengue prevention and awareness activities are being carried out across the country, involving government institutions, local authorities, community organizations, and citizens.

As part of these nationwide efforts, the Rangpur Urban Youth Council has taken a proactive role in promoting dengue awareness and preventive action across Rangpur city. With the support of SERAC-Bangladesh and Rangpur City Corporation, the Council is working to encourage residents to take practical steps to prevent dengue and maintain cleaner, healthier surroundings.

Dengue prevention is not limited to medical treatment. Preventing mosquito breeding and keeping the surrounding environment clean are essential parts of reducing the risk of dengue transmission.

Recognizing this, the Rangpur Urban Youth Council has been conducting community-based awareness activities, including the distribution of dengue-prevention stickers carrying important messages for residents. These activities aim to remind people that dengue prevention begins at home and requires regular attention to the surrounding environment. The Council is also actively involved in cleanliness activities, including clearing bushes, removing unwanted vegetation, and cleaning areas that may provide suitable breeding environments for mosquitoes. Through these initiatives, the Council is seeking to turn public awareness into practical, everyday action.

The Council’s efforts are being carried out in coordination with ongoing activities of the Rangpur City Corporation. Youth volunteers are directly engaging with city-level cleanliness and dengue-prevention initiatives, strengthening the connection between municipal efforts and community participation.

The program was attended by Md. Mizanur Rahman Mizu, Waste Management Officer, Zone-1, Rangpur City Corporation, who joined the campaign and highlighted the importance of maintaining clean and healthy surroundings. Such collaboration demonstrates how local government institutions and youth-led organizations can work together to strengthen community awareness and support dengue-prevention efforts.

The Rangpur Urban Youth Council believes that young people have an important role to play in responding to public health challenges. Through awareness campaigns, sticker distribution, community engagement, and participation in cleanliness drives, young volunteers are helping spread preventive messages directly within the community. Their involvement also encourages residents to see dengue prevention not simply as a government responsibility, but as a shared responsibility of every citizen.

Dengue prevention begins with simple but consistent actions. Residents can help reduce mosquito breeding by regularly checking their homes and surroundings for stagnant water, cleaning drains and containers, disposing of waste properly, and removing objects or areas where water can accumulate. Keeping bushes and surrounding areas clean is also important as part of maintaining a healthier urban environment. When individuals, families, communities, youth organizations, and local authorities work together, preventive efforts can reach more people and become more sustainable.

The campaign carries a simple but powerful message:

Dengue prevention is not a one-day campaign. It is a continuous responsibility that begins with each of us.
